At most surgical centers, you meet a rotating cast: a check-in nurse, a pre-op nurse, a circulating nurse, a recovery nurse, a discharge nurse. Each hand-off is a moment where information can be lost — where you have to tell your story again, where you become a chart instead of a person.

At NCSS, one nurse stays with you from the moment you arrive until the moment you leave. She takes your vitals in pre-op. She walks with you into the operating room and stays there as your advocate — keeping you warm, ensuring you're comfortably positioned, tracking every instrument and supply used during your surgery. She's the first face you see in recovery. She reviews your post-operative instructions with you. She walks you to your car and hands you off to the person driving you home.

Your surgeon will follow up that night or the next morning — and they take it seriously. But everything else, every step you take in this building, happens with the same nurse beside you.

Why NCSS exists, in my own words.

I grew up in Orange County — and aside from years spent away at school, I've never lived anywhere else. I graduated from University High in Irvine, attended UCI and Harvard while still in high school, and became the medical director of Newport Center for Special Surgery when we opened our doors in 1996.

In the thirty years since, I've watched aesthetic surgery grow around us: new buildings, new technology, new marketing. What has not changed is what actually determines whether an operation goes well: the details.

Before medical school, I walked on to a championship football team at Penn State, where I played for Joe Paterno — for many years the winningest coach in Division I history. Two Bowl plaques hang in the office from those years. Paterno had one line he repeated constantly.

The difference between average and great is the small details. Sweat the small stuff, and the big stuff takes care of itself.

That was Penn State football. It has also been every real thing I've ever done in my life. Growing up, I dug holes and mowed lawns for a landscaping business I ran. I wrote code for Bell as a summer programmer. I designed pumps for refineries and nuclear plants. I did semiconductor inside sales. I worked lunches in the school cafeteria. Different jobs, one common lesson: get the small stuff wrong and nothing works.

At NCSS, we sweat the small stuff. Every case is performed under physician anesthesia — no exceptions, no nurse anesthetists. Every patient gets one nurse who stays with them from arrival through discharge — not a series of handoffs. Every scheduled patient receives a free pre-operative consultation with me personally, where we review medications, plan for discharge, and answer questions before the day of surgery. My wife, Dr. Denise Scott, is a board-certified endocrinologist next door and is available on call for our patients when needed.

Our medical and safety equipment is second to none. Our nursing staff came out of academic medical centers — our head nurse trained at Beth Israel in Boston, a Harvard teaching hospital. Our location — 1401 Avocado, at Newport Center — is unrivaled. And our facility fees are among the most competitive in Newport. It is the plastic surgery place people in the know want to go.

To me, after thirty years of watching how surgery centers operate in this city, one honest question is worth asking:
